Alfried Längle, Vienna

1 CE
Human beings strive for happiness. We all want to have a good life. But how can we reach this goal? Upon what does it depend to get fulfillment in life? – The good life depends upon much more from ourselves than we often think. In large part, it depends upon really becoming ourselves. Only when we can make use of what we are essentially, in the deep inner self, and only if we can thus bring ourselves to the world, "to existence," can we get back a feeling that all our endeavors are worth being lived.
The concept of "inner consent" is key to such existential access, or the life well lived. It embraces our freedom as well as our relationship and feelings, our perception of the world's reality and possible development in the future including the meaning of existence. This feeling of inner consent reflects our basic capacity to deal with the world and ourselves.
Further, it forms a matrix for motivation and practical guidance of life but also for the understanding and treatment of psychopathology. In short, the question of inner consent forms the basis for the structural model of modern Existential Analytical Psychotherapy.

ALFRIED LANGLE'S WORKSHOP & PANEL/Q&A FOLLOWING

Saturday, 10am - 1pm*: Expanding Humanistic Practice with Existential Analysis and Logotherapy
Alfried Längle, Vienna

2.75 CEs
This workshop focuses on building a bridge between the given humanistic understanding of treatment and the add-ons by Existential Analysis and Logotherapy. Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to arrive at a closer view of four key existential themes. These four themes derive from a phenomenological understanding of human experience, and form an inescapable life-challenge with which each person must confront. They are: the world, being alive, being a person, and needing meaning.
The workshop will focus on the application of these themes to psychotherapy and their implication for psychopathology. Thus, it opens access to introspective uses of the existential themes and for experiments in everyday living. A demonstration of the approach as well as small group work will be included.

1pm-2:30pm LUNCH BREAK- On our own
2:30pm-4:30pm EHI Panel with Alfried Laengle
The panel discussion consists of the EHI board in conversation with featured presenter Dr. Alfried Laengle. Each board member will have the opportunity to ask Alfried questions about any of the subjects he discusses in either his keynote address or workshop, although questions about the workshop will be emphasized. The chief aim of the panel discussion is to elaborate on and sometimes challenge points of contrast and comparison between Dr. Laengle's existential-analytic approach to psychotherapy and the existential-humanistic approach. Such elaboration and questioning is aimed at helping both board members and the audience to better understand Dr. Laengle's approach and to consider the opportunities for bridge-building between his and the existential-humanistic approach.
The panel and Dr Laengle will also discuss the relevance of Existential therapeutic models and Existential Humanistic therapy today for people in the world - how does it help the common person live a more 'worthwhile' life, so to speak?

4:30pm-5:30pm Audience Q&A for Dr Laengle / Conference Closure
Audience members will have a chance to ask Dr. Laengle questions following up the EHI panel, or about his work, today's workshop or Friday night's keynote. Conference closing to follow this panel.

EHI 7 November 15/16, 2013 at AgeSong Institute in San Francisco

EHI:7 Conference Theme

Befriending Anxiety and Worry:
Finding Strength and Meaning in Everyday Living

“Finding the center of strength within ourselves is in the long
run the best contribution we can make to our fellow men. ...
One person with indigenous inner strength exercises a great
calming effect on panic among people around him. It is is what
our society needs — not new ideas and inventions; important
as these are, and not geniuses and supermen, but persons who
can “be”, that is, persons who have a center of strength within
themselves.”
~ Rollo May, Man’s Search For Himself

Speaker Proposals Now Being Accepted

We welcome proposals that address this theme from a variety of perspectives with preference for experiential workshops that combine a didactics with ‘felt experiencing’ or other modalities that move us beyond the abstract and talking ‘about’ things.

About EHI:7

Celebrating EHI’s 7TH annual conference, EHI:7 will focus on the introduction and deepening understanding of the theory and practice of existential-humanistic psychotherapy.
Learn the basic assumptions underlying existential-humanistic (E-H) psychotherapy, therapeutic interventions as illuminated through “live” work with active cases, demonstrations, and engaging presentations. Also explore how to effectively work in the “here and now” with yourself, your client, and in the relation between the two. Stretch the principles of E-H beyond psychotherapy into other realms of human experience and psychological work. EHI:7 will be held in San Francisco, at AgeSong Elder Care in centrally-located Hayes Valley neighborhood. The planned schedule will include high level keynote speakers and workshops. EHI:6 hosted over 5 keynote speakers and 6 breakout sessions.
